Henry Hollingsworth Harris Jr. Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.

Henry Hollingsworth "Hal" Harris Jr., Jacksonville, Fla., businessman and resident of Vicar's Landing at Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., died Nov. 27, 2000.

He was born May 11, 1911, in Greenville, the son of Henry Hollingsworth Harris and Janie
Connor Murray Harris.

Mr. Harris graduated from Darlington School, Rome, Ga., and Davidson College, Davidson, N.C., in 1932, with a BA degree, Cum Laude. He served in the U.S. Army from 1941-1946 in various posts in the U.S. and with the 77th Division in the Pacific Theater and occupation of Japan. He retired with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. Mr. Harris worked for Price Waterhouse & Co. in New York from 1932-1935. He then worked for McKesson-Murray Drug Co. in Columbia. Following the war he returned to McKesson & Robbins in Orlando, Fla., moving later to Jacksonville, where he retired in 1970.

Through his life, he was active in the Presbyterian Church, serving St. Johns Presbyterian Church in many capacities. He served as moderator of the St. Augustine Presbytery. Mr. Harris was a past President of the Board of Trustees at St. Johns Country Day School, a member of the Board of Trustees at Davidson College and a member of the Board of Trustees at Presbyterian College, Clinton, S.C., where he was recently awarded an honorary doctorate in Commercial Science. He was a member of Palms Presbyterian Church, Jacksonville Beach, the Florida Yacht Club, Jacksonville, Fla., Poinsett Club of Greenville, and the downtown Kiwanis Club of Jacksonville, Fla., with perfect attendance for over 50 years.

He is survived by his daughter, Craig Harris McDaniel and her husband, Dr. William Jason McDaniel, Jr., of Raleigh, N.C.; grandchildren, Mary McDaniel Ridgeway and her husband, Dr. Stephen R. Ridgeway, of Roanoke, Va., Dr. William Jason McDaniel III, of Raleigh, N.C.; a great-grandson, Henry Harris "Hal" Ridgeway; and a sister, Jean Harris Knight, of Greenville.
A memorial service of remembrance and gratitude for the lives of Mary and Hal Harris was held Thursday, Nov. 30, at Palms Presbyterian Church, Jacksonville Beach. Burial was private in South Carolina. A memorial service will be held at Fourth Presbyterian Church, Greenville, Saturday, Dec. 2, at 11 a.m.
