Aubrey Alison Bishop Jr.

BISHOP Aubrey Alison Bishop, Jr., 90 years of age, died August 15, 2008 at home. He was born January 1, 1918 in Tibbs Community, TN. At the age of 23 he corrected "the accident of his birth and moved home to Mobile." He served in WW II piloting B 24's and the Korean Conflict flying reconnaissance aircraft. Prior to serving in WW II, Mr. Bishop worked at Brookley Air Force Base. In 1946 he returned to Brookley Field as a line mechanic and attained status of Superintendent of the Aircraft Branch until the base's closing. After Brookley's closure, he secured employment at Fort Rucker, where he worked as a helicopter test pilot until his retirement in 1978. He served as a Captain in the esteemed Dixie Division of the 31st Infantry. He also achieved the rank of Warrant Officer IV in the Alabama Army National Guard where he piloted both fixed wing aircraft and helicopters. He was a graduate of Jones Law School in Montgomery, AL, a member of the Sons of Confederate Veterans, Raphael Semmes Camp and the VFW Post 49. Mr. Bishop and his wife owned and operated the first motel, The Moulin Rouge, on Dauphin Island, AL. His wife of 63 years, Doris Hassell Bishop, and three children survive him; Sherry L. Bishop, Ava Bishop Barbour and Aubrey A. Bishop, III (Jenny). Five grandchildren; Aubrey A. Bishop, IV (Maryanna), Alison Baxter Herlihy, Lauren Marie Barbour, Baxter Alexander Bishop and Justine Herlihy, all of Mobile. He takes with him the sweetness of his caretaker, "second wife" Ms. Beverly Williams Taylor. The family extends special appreciation to Alacare Hospice and their staff. Mr. Bishop was a member of an elite corps of fiercely independent men who lived life with an unwavering devotion to savoring all it could offer. He possessed a precise intellect and a boundless capacity for loving his family and friends. He has now "stored his plane in the hangar on the field where flyers go." A graveside service will be held today at 2PM in Pine Crest West Cemetery.
