The theme of the 2009 MOSB National Convention was
"Welcome Home".
With Columbia, South Carolina being the birth place of our organization in 1938, the Convention Planning Committee wanted to have an atmosphere of a family reunion. With this as out theme, we planned a couple of fun outings that would promote closer family ties between our membership.

Thursday, June 11th

On Thursday, June 11th, after a full day of Executive Council meetings and members arriving for the convention, we held a Family Cookout at the River Center, Saluda Shoals Park. Commander Allen Frye of the General Maxcy Gregg Chapter was our cook and South Carolina State Archeologist, Dr. Jonathan Leader, gave a presentation on the recovery of the 2nd Hunley Crew who were buried under the Citadel Football Stadium.

Friday, June 12th

Friday, June 12th, signaled the beginning of our actual convention. The day began with a rousing presentation by ANV Commander Brett Bradshaw at the Forrest Cavalry Corps Breakfast. Following the FCC Breakfast was the opening ceremonies of this year's convention and our first business secession. At the conclusion of the first business secession we proceeded into the Annual Awards Luncheon. Our guest speaker for this event was Col. Mike Dawson of the River Alliance. Col. Dawson gave a spirited presentation on the Battle of Congaree Creek and the efforts of the River Alliance to preserve this important historical site. Following The Awards Luncheon was an afternoon seminar on the raising of the H. L. Hunley submarine by State Undwater Archeologist, Chris Amer. Chris was one of the divers who worked around the clock to raise the submarine.
Finally, after a whole day of meetings and activities, eightysix members and guest took a short ride down to Lake Murray Marina, where the Southern Patriot cruise boat was waiting to carry all on a two hour cruise on Lake Murray and the enjoy the gift of song from Stan and Cathy Clardy.

Saturday, June 13th

Saturday, June 13th, marked our final day of the convention. After beginning with the Prayer Breakfeast, the members in attendance conviened for the final Business Secession. Following the final Business Secession the General Executive Council met again for its Post Convention meeting. After the meetings had concluded the members who were taking the tours went first to the South Carolina State Museum for a joint lunch and tour of the Confederate Relic Room. Form there the tours split into two groups. The first group went to Congaree Creek and the second group went to Elmwood Cemetery for the history of Columbia. At the conclusion of these two tours, both groups met at Trinty Cathedral to pay respects to General Wade Hampton III and the other Confederates who are buried there. From Trinity Cathedral the tour proceeded to Millwood Plantation for a presentation on General Hampton, by Joe Long of the Confederate Relic Room. The day concluded with the Grand Ball with entertainment by the Blue Ridge Rounders and a rousing talk by Doug Bostic of James Island.
